ALL the time. I just use it when I think something is funny. I almost never ever actually laugh when I'm doing the computer. Even ROFLOL doesn't mean I actually laughed :D It just means I thought it was funnier than a LOL!
And yes I've said LOL in real life. Sad huh.... LOL

Yes, but sometimes I may say something a little bit sarcastic or flippant and I want the person to know I'm kidding, so I'll say lol or just put a little :). Should I be using stms? (Smiling To My Self).

Sometimes. I think most people don't literally laugh but it's meant to show we think it's somewhat humorous. ;-)

I do it a lot- it's just like what's up- you don't actually look and start describing the ceiling- it's just a figure of speech.
