Yesterday, in Blockbusters a little girl wanted to rent a movie. The female clerk said: "AWESOME." Then the little girl gave her the money to pay and the clerk said: "AWESOME." The capital letters are to denote intensity and loudness of the clerks voice. If any of the following transpired I missed it: awesome
—awesomely, adv. —awesomeness, n.
/aw"seuhm/, adj.
1. inspiring awe: an awesome sight.
2. showing or characterized by awe.
3. Slang. very impressive: That new white convertible is totally awesome.
[1590-1600; AWE + -SOME[1]]
Usage. See awful.

AWESOME is the word, sorry.

Wade C sorta rhetorical. But if your are going to use the word why not at least reserve it for something truly gnarly or rad or boss or whatever.

For me, the word awesome is a slang word. It refers to something that I like alot. Some other ones are: Cool, Far-out, Bitchen, Boss, Groovy, Totally Rad.

I think the correct one should be 1. and 2. but 3. has become quite common in the US.

Synonyms include:
amazing, awe-inspiring, awesome, awful, awing, impressive
(vs. unimpressive)

I suspect the clerk (wonder why "female") meant number 3. on your list as a surprise at first, and expression of gratitude in the second instance.
Note that even "awful" inspires awe but apparently when many people say, "I had an awful flight," they mean it was a tiring, boring air travel!

Well maybe the clerk was really impressed with the girls choice of movie AND her paying in cash. I've been known to say "cool beans" and have been saying it since childhood. Where that saying came from I have no idea but its been stuck in my vocabulary for 54 years. Awesome is just harmless slang. Beats her using the "f" word.

Awesome means amazing / inspiring... maybe the clerk wanted to say that it was a great choice! :)

It would seem as if you had answered your own question.

Was this just a rhetorical question?
