I was at work & found out that there is this new rule for employee's who have dependents for medical benefits: if you have a dependent, you must provide proof (i.e. if you have a spouse, then you should provide a marriage certificate). People were talking about it and I heard several comments surrounding that same sex couples "don't have to" obide by this rule (although, they do) and they also were making negative connotations toward same-sexed couples. I thought: "well, if most of our society would allow for same-sex marriage, then no one would have to follow different rules." So, what do Y users think...should our society allow for same sex marriage? Why or why not?

Maybe in 2020s... or 2030s. But honestly, I think most of people would feel fine with civil partnership instead of a marriage, because it gives them the same rights that a marriage would give, so why bother trying to change that. So it might take a long time to converse civil partnership into a marriage in the countries where partnerships are legal. But I totally understand you. I prefer having a wife than a female "partner". PS. If you are serious about moving, you better choose Canada over the US, 'cause there are a lot of homophobia in the US even if they perform same-sex marriage in some states.

First, Adam and Steve and Adam and Eve is very old and says nothing. What is correct and vital to a diverse community is one of equality. This goes back many decades and includes interracial marriages. This really shouldn't be a debate as the Constitution states that "All men are created equal". This would include women as well. Gay persons are not asking for exceptional rights, but equal ones.

Many people disagree with the idea that two people of the same sex should not be granted the same rights as people of opposite sexes. What is the problem here? Straight people do not influence gay people, and gay people do not influence straight people. Look at it this way. Straight marriages end up in divorces and predomently gay relationships last longer.

It is a misnomer that gay people are promiscuous, as straight people are as well. Gay people could label straight people as well as straight people could label gay people. It is a stupid war against friends.

Gay people have died in the military. They have created art and are prominent musicians. Straight people have done the same. Are we not all the same?

I think gays only want the right to marry so badly just because the rest of society is hanging onto their idea that gay marriage is just wrong.

STRAIGHTS have had marriage althroughout history, and in recent years the desire to get married is only declining more and more. Fear of the relationship losing romance/intimacy, not wanting to be tied down to one person... Probably some other fears in there, but you get the picture. It's only becoming more and more antiquated. If we didn't make a fuss over gay marriages, how many gays would actually go through with it?

Marriage is messily confounded with civil unions in this country. The former is based on a spiritual vow, while the latter is a social contract. I think government should be involved only in civil unions, which should be available to any pair or group. Marriages are personal and the business of no one but the people directly involved.

Yes. Gay people deserve the misery of divorce just as much as straight people.

Seriously. What right do our legislators have to determine whether a personal relationship is valid or not. This is a personal choice, if I choose to marry another woman that's nobody's business but mine (and maybe hers lol)

Marriage is a religious ceremony and the government should have nothing to do with that....
Civil unions should be established through the government to bestow legal standing between 2 or more people, that should have nothing to do with gender.

I don't care, love is love. Two adults love each other, then they have something that many of us can't find. Who are we to say its wrong?

What they do behind closed doors is their business. If you really want to imagine it, then by all means imagine it, but don't condemn it.

Society shouldn't even care.
