When a manufacturer has made numerous fixes and upgrades, rather than have people install them individually, the mfgr bundles them all together and releases it as a service pack. For example, many peolpe are waiting to install vista until service pack 1

Well Service packs are updates and overhauls for Operating systems from Micrososft.Service pack 2 is the latest one for Windows XP,Service pack 2 contains:
Various security fixes
Windows Movie maker
Windows Firewall
And various fixes.
