A firewall is a layer of protection on a network/computer. A firewall can do different functions depending on the type of firewall. Most common firewalls block IP traffic but some proxy firewalls can block actual web sites and file types.

A firewall is a hardware or software mediary that data must pass through to go in/out your computer. Your computer has its own firewall, routers can have firewalls, and servers can have firewalls. The point of a firewall is to limit who can send data to whom and on what ports. The firewall on your computer can also control which programs can access the internet and on which ports. Firewalls are important for disabling trojan horses, spyware, and other malicious software.

A firewall is a set of related programs, located at a network gateway server, that protects the resources of a private network from users from other networks. (The term also implies the security policy that is used with the programs.) An enterprise with an intranet that allows its workers access to the wider Internet installs a firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its own private data resources and for controlling what outside resources its own users have access to.
