First you have to finish and edit it. No publisher will consider unfinished work from an unproven author.
There are two types of publishing, traditional and self-publishing. If you choose to go with self-pubbing, I would recommend http://www.lulu.com as a great site. They don't pretend to be anything they are not, and have excellent service. All the decisions will be in your hands. However, going with a company like this is a difficult road and it is not considered a publishing credential if you look to go traditional down the road. Here is some other information about the downside of self-publishers (also known as vanity presses):
http://www.sfwa.org/beware/vanitypublishers.html
As far as novels go, different publishers specialize in different things, and fiction is a broad world. You have to try and sell your material to companies that produce similar works (ie, don't try and sell a fantasy novel to a romance publisher). There are some smaller presses that will look at unagented material, but none of the bigger ones will.
So do your homework. Take a look at the most recent "Writer's Market"... or even better, try the "Guide to Literary Agents".
I absolutely suggest getting an agent instead of approaching publishers directly. I'm assuming you are not a contract attorney, so you will need someone to look over any offers and to guide you through the publishing world.
Also, you will not be seding your manuscript to agents unsolicited. Unsolicited means that they did not ask to see it. You should send them a query letter and see if they ask to see a partial (usually the first three chapters). If you send the whole thing unsolicited, it will just get you a form rejection letter and end up in the recycling bin! Quite a waste of money, since postage is not free. Research each agent's specific submission guidelines and follow their rules!
No publisher or agent should charge you any money up front! That is the sign of a scam! They make money by selling your book. Agents work on a commission (generally 15% of the amount of money the publishers pay you).
Here are some websites that can help. Read them thoroughly (especially Miss Snark-- love her!) and research, research, research!

http://www.absolutewrite.com/
http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/
And be warned of the people on this list:

You will face a lot of rejection, but if you really want this then keep at it! Work hard, and good luck!

Hi Blossom!
Getting a book published is hard work. It take perseverance, and usually luck! There are a couple different ways you can publish your work. First things first. Have a finely polished manuscript--one free from misspellings, grammar and punctuation mistakes, and one where the story flows easily. Once you have that accomplished, research your market. There are books you can check out in the public library--books that change constantly so there's no point in buying them. The Literary Market Place is an excellent source for finding an agent or a publisher.
If you choose to find an agent--which is not always necessary today--then make sure you steer clear of those that charge the writer fees for reading, editing, etc. Remember--an agent makes money the same way you do...by selling your work. An agent should not make their money from selling you services!
If you prefer to go it alone without an agent, search websites like Preditors & Editors and writerswall.com. Both websites have listings of publishers that accept unagented submissions. Once you select a publisher to submit your work to, make certain you read their submission guidelines and follow them to the letter! Never assume your way of submitting a manuscript will be accepted. The first sign of an amateur writer, is one who ignores what a publisher requires during the submission process.
Always present your best work in the most professional way. Anything less will result in a rejection...or worse, your manuscript landing on the slush pile that never gets read.
Do your research. An informed writer is a successful writer.
Good luck to you in your endeavor. :o)

Here is a live publication printer update. There are three sites
that help you edit, transcribe, and topic your work. That is now
a requirement in some book printing. First of all in pencil,
on manilla, or notebook paper. Topic such as notes, chapters,
on top of page. Writing in margins is not realized, nor neat.
Neat is nice. If you are writing all original realize that editting is
contemporary of the publication network news. So quote is not
usually allowed, nor ambiance styles realized. Also anything
that is typed, is subject to more scrutiny than written due to
the computers itself spell correct and word process usage of
live news network. This starts to cost. Generally a sponsor
willing to start your company can be found on campuses.
Contract is often the technique to get writers to join so be alert
to higher pay is for fulfilling agreements. Chose a pen name.
Use a pen name with some research, that the pen name sells
is the unfortunate gem within your own responsibility although
there are several top investors that may appear for this point.
Have all photos, illustrators paid up to date, could be in contract so this should be finalized. Having sales customers avail
is okay. Don't export. http://www.writers.org

You need to send it to an agent. Find agents that read ur sort of work, then along with the first three chapters of your story write your query letter and send a self adressed enveope so they can send u their response. Query letter is basically about who you are, what your book is about, and why she should represnt you. If the agent likes your book, he/she will send it to publishers, and if the publishers like it, they wil make an offer on it, to buy ur book. Before you do any of this, have people... A LOT of pepole look at it and give you critisim. Dont waste time sending it out to agents, unless its absolutely perfect. Of course you can also self publish, but you will not make as much money as you would by trying to sell it to real publishing houses.

You need a Literary Agent to read your manuscript to see if he or she wants to represent you by submitting the manuscript to a publisher.
Buy a copy of the book The Writer's Market, it lists contact information for Literary Agents and Publishers.

Well there are things that you should consider before getting a book published. These things basically emphasize on the knowledge of the type of writing you are involved in, and there are two broad categories that have been defined to be helpful for the writer and the publisher both - Non Fiction and Fiction. As simple as that.
If you are getting yourr work published, one more thing that you need to know is whether you are getting your publishing done traditionally or doing it all by yourself. In traditional publishing, the publisher themselves work out the expenses for publishing, sales and marketing, distribution and warehousing of your book, they would own the rights over the book. The author is paid in form of royalties that the sales generates. This is the case when the gateways og the publishing company are open for you.
Here comes the other phase where one wills to get his/her work published. This is done mainly by self-publishing. Here most of the expenses are handled by the author himself/herself especially the publishing. Then marketing and the other tasks are handled by the writer themselves as well. However, there are various types of ways in which publishing can be done by one self and these schemes come with various servies that the publishers provide to such authors. Printing on demand, vanity publishing, subsidy publishing are some schemes that are available by various service providers.
well for many cases and instances of writing and such suggestions I personally refer http://ghostwritersguild.com for getting knowledge and information on writing and publishing. Various tutors and other guidance is also provided there. that is one site as a source to get help for publishing and writing.
basically when it comes to writing, and publishing the work on own, the task requires intense concentration and dedication. All resource are meant to be gathered on your own. This is where such writing services online help a lot.
Now when it comes to publishing, the tradiional publishing companies utilize the services of agents. who also help authors get their work published.
As a writer you will need to look out for a good agent and the exact publishing company at the same time to get your writing work published as the right place for the right people.
to get your work published, you will need to submit your manuscript(fiction) or sample chapters(non fiction) with synopsis. also, this needs to get the work done in the exact and desired manner i.e. the grammar, citation style format and description etc. You should be ready with such work before you approach for the next step of publishing. Moreover, you should submit your manuscript or sample to more than one agent or publisher as there is huge competition for good written content. You can get the desired amount for your work in such case. The companies also accept work if the somehow get the approach of extracting money from your work. So this becomes crucial for the writer in their 'to do' list while publishing.
Here are some resources that can help you in your publishing task and can be found online as well
