The drive usually takes me just over 3 hours and I do it quite often. The roads are not bad, they are actually in the process of expansion right now.

I would suggest that you start out first thing in the morning as there is a particular area of the highway that gets stuck with traffic as it funnels down to a one lane.. Can add an hour or so to your travel time.

I would also highly suggest you do this trip on a week day as the road is one and two lanes the entire way.

You also have to deal with the occasional car overheating and causing traffic. There isn't anywhere to stop for gas and such for several stretches.

On the way there you see some hills, desert, etc - The way back is nicer as you go around a mountain pass, you will have an incredible view from the mountains.

The drive is usually pretty calm the entire way if you do it at the right time. The roads are in good condition, many new.

You should stop in Primm and have lunch or dinner - They also have 2 gas stations. There is also an outlet mall there as well, if you want to do a little bit of shopping before getting to the city.

I hope you enjoy your trip and I hoped I was some help! Take Care!

If you can't leave until 12:30, then I would make sure you are on the road at 12:30. At 12:30 you might get lucky and be fine, but traffic to Vegas starts to get thick by then on a Friday. Your problem is you are at least an hour away from the thickest part of traffic, the section of the 15 from the 60 all the way to Victorville. Try to leave earlier if you can, otherwise there is no "best" time until after midnight.

The drive is almost all desert. There is up and down the whole way. Please be care full from Barstow to state line, because that road can be like a drag strip. All cars what to do is get there the fastest they can and get home even faster. I left 3 weeks ago on a Friday at rush hour going to Salt Lake City which passes through Vegas, and it was a NIGHTMARE. But have some fun.
