I THINK THEY SHOULD. REALLY...YOU DONT HEAR OF PEOPLE SMOKING POT AND MURDERING SOMEONE, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. THE INDIANS CALLED A BOWL A "PEACE PIPE". SO THAT SHOULD TELL YA SOMETHING. PEOPLE SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE THIS WAY, BUT IN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN HOME, SURE....LEGALIZE IT. ALCOHOL DOES WORSE TO PEOPLE IN MY EYES.

Legalization would be a really good choice for this nation. However, it probably won't happen anytime soon. The "War on Drugs" is fueled mainly by marijuana arrests. These arrests are cash cows! The government is able to seize property, money, and just about anything else they can conceivably connect the marijuana to.

Seized property is not what happens most of the time though. Every person arrested for having marijuana does not result in a the confiscation of property. However, every arrest does add to the number of drugs taken of the streets. Being able to show hard results enables them to obtain more funding.

In the end, it will take a radically change of mind for the entire country. The government will have to have absolutely no choice but to legalize marijuana before it will even consider legalizing marijuana.

A tough question and the answers are complex. Marijuana controlled by the state has the bonus that it would be controlled (for example, one wouldn't go to a store and buy oregano re-tagged as pot), and the government could possibly make a killing in taxes from it. On the other hand, despite what many pot advocates would say, there are addiction problems related to pot just as there are alcohol. These aren't straight narcotic addictions so much as psychological/emotional. Pot makes one feel good, just as a beer tastes good after a day of work. The difference is, with pot smokers, "wake and bake" is like an inside joke, but anyone who knew a fellow who woke up and had a vodka and OJ would be trying to send that friend to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. That aspect of the controversy should certainly be considered before a simple "yes" or "no" is given.
(p.s.--I vote yes, but with education and support in place for the health problems that will follow)

I say legalize it. here's why:

it is a completely NATURALLY occuring plant. I simply cannot understand how a plant that freely grows in the wild can be made illegal. suppose its discovered that if you roll up dandelions (completely absurd) and smoke them you get a high. Are we going to make dandelions illegal? Last year in columbus there was this big thing about salvium (which is another plant a person can smoke for a high) not being illegal.

to expand on the above point. heroin is another illegal drug in this country. it's derived from the poppy, a common flower that many people may have in their gardens, or have its seeds on their bagel in the morning. yet the poppy is completely legal to possess. why? processing. thats the difference, and thats why marijuana should be legal.

cannibis plant => pipe => user
poppy seed + processing => needle => user

drugs that require processing should be illegal, they are truly controlled substances. the ones that occur naturally on this green earth? how can you criminalize something that otherwise grows freely.

and it may be a gateway drug. people may get tired of the high they get from weed and look for something harder. for that matter, people may get tired of the buzz they get from alcohol or nicotine, and search for something harder. or, they may tire of the simple jolt they get from caffeine, and move on to speed or meth. its all relative. anything could be a gateway drug for an individual.

Personally, yes, I do, for several reasons. One is the medical benifits of marajuana over the synthetic derived from marajuana, marinol. Marinol, used to stop nausea from chemo, as well as other ailments, has way too many side effects to actually be considered safe. Unfortunately, the drug companies, with their large lobby as well as the alcohol, and tobacco industries are against it. You might actually smoke a joint, instead of taking a drink, which destroys your liver. Or you might smoke a joint, instead of a cigarette, which destroys your lungs, and causes cancer, and other respiratory diseases, driving up the costs of insurance, and hospitalization. This might deprive the tobacco or alcohol industries from their oh-so-precious profits.

Secondly, the military, as well as the law enforcement groups get large amounts of funding to fight the so called "drug war", and they are not really keen on the idea of loosing this large amount of money, and so will also fight the legalization of marajuana.

Personally, I would legalize marajuana, allow the tobacco AND alcohol industries to sell it in various grades of potency, tax the sales and importation of marajuana, and then use the proceeds not pocketed by the politicians to fight the dangerous drugs such as meth, coke, and heroin to name a few. Unfortunately, the C.I.A has used drug sales to fund their covert operations both abroad, and in the States. There is proof that the C.I.A brought cocaine into the States, as well as heroin during the Vietnam war. They are also responsible for the meth craze, as well as Ket, and a few other drugs, which they distribute to their own drug dealers, poisoning millions of our children each year, and reaping huge profits in the process.

I have a medical condition which leaves me nauseous quite often, and was told by my own doctor that were it legal to do so, that he would write me a prescription for medical marajuana immediately, since it does seem to help many with the same condition, and has very few side effects compaired to such things as compizine, and marinol. I hope this helps.

I think it should be, simply because less people would do it then. 75% of people do it just because it is illegal, and something that they can still get away with.

At the same time, i know it never will be, for one reason and one only. Weed is so easy to grow, there would be no way to tax it. Which is an entirely different issue in its own.

YES! Although I can't stand it, I hate smoking of any kind !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I have always felt that if it was legalized and taxed that the profit money that now goes to mafias could instead be marked for CANCER RESEARCH or to buy homes for the poor or to pay for HEALTH INSURANCE for EVERYONE !!! If you take the huge criminal profits out of it, the crime rate drops and the country could benefit immensely !!!
We of the "hippie" era (1960's - 1970s having been saying this for 40 years now -- so that tells us ONE THING: the government is making more money KEEPING IT ILLEGAL otherwise they'd legalize it & collect taxes on it as the do TABACCO & ALCOHOL !!! yOU ALL MIGHT WANT TO RESEARCH THAT!!! See if you can find out how much money the USA GOV. makes by keeping it illegal rather than what they'd make if they legalized it!!! Then we'll know if you're Potential Newpaper People !!!)
Let me know what you find out !!! ~ : )

They might as well. There wasting to much of the taxpayers money trying to stop it. Just make it legal and tax it to death. After all alcohol is legal and not much different Why should one killer be legal and another not. Also it would provide more jobs, something this country is really hurting for.

Yes it should be legalized. I think marijuana has a less violent effect on people than alcohol. Alcohol can make people very uncontrollable, violent and sick. Where as marijuana makes people more passive, layed back.

Yes, prohibition has never worked. Just look at the Gangster era back in the 20's. You just drive a product that people want underground. That being said, addiction needs to be looked at in a serious way in this country.

I see no reason why not. Alcohol is legal, and has similar results. If it was made legal it would be one less thing that the criminals could use to get money from.

The very fact that it is illegal makes if something people have to pay lots of money for, which makes it perfect for criminals.
