Firstly if you are looking to driver around the countryside then you won't see the streets of Glasgow...........a decent small car and I'm guessing here at automatic as you're american is about £35 per day ( I work for a car rental company ) and you would need to book in advance , as the summer is very busy. A nice Hotel in Glasgow will cost from £70 - £115 + per night. You could do it on a budget by staying in a hostel and using public transport.

I'm not sure if you're in the States or not, so I guess expense would depend on where you live.

Scotland is expensive... They're on the Pound and it is not very good against the US dollar right now. Also, Glasgow is not a good sightseeing town. It's very industrial. All of my Scottish friends told me when I went to Scotland last summer to go to Edinburgh and the Highlands.

I highly recommend those places instead. There are a lot of places in the Highlands that are romantic. Why not drive out to the Aisle of Skye for a few days? It's wonderful. Stay in the little town of Portree. There are a lot of little bed and breakfasts, loads of sightseeing, and this time of year there aren't a lot of tourists. :)

Depends on how many times you get mugged / robbed / have your car stolen etc. Glasgow's a bit like Liverpool but without the self pity.
