I think it's because the brain isn't fully functioning and the hormones are raging. I only recently read that the decision making part of the brain isn't fully developed until 18yrs old. Most teenagers I know (including the two I'm responsible for) are constantly questioning everything they did 'oh, I'm such a loser', 'I shouldn't have done/said that', 'my life is ruined' etc. So they end up twisting everything you say to them and turning it into a negative. Even if you praise them, or comment that they look nice, or discuss some homework with them they don't take heed with anything you say - after all, we're only the parents, we wouldn't understand, we don't see things as they really are.

It's darn confusing and frustrating. I wish they could all know what a wonderful time of life the teenage years are and to stop being so self conscious about everything. But, I guess we all have to go through it and we only realise when we're in our 20's how we should have reacted in our teens.

Because they're always being told they are. It's a very difficult phase of life to go through. If you're lucky, you survive high school and you don't harbor ill will toward your classmates even as you enter your 40s.

I think as teenagers we all go through moments of self doubt. Teenagers are also very self conscious, so when they make a mistake, it is hard to let it go.
