first answerer is absolute unless you "love" the car
second answerer is way low on price estimate
the car is "old" now. are the body and interior still in good enough shape to be worthy of the expense of this type of repair?. this is an interesting car and may hold actual serious value at a later date in time, if kept and repaired properly. [doing things properly is never cheap] expect parts and labor to be in neighborhood of 3-4 grand if not more

I think what you really should ask is is this even worth repairing . Your going to need to find out a couple of numbers first ,
1) What's the value of this car ? Look it up on the internet at kellybluebook.com or a simular site .
2) How costly will it be to have a " crank kit " installed in the existing motor ? Keep in mind that it's very unlikely that this can be done without removing the engine from the car . Most shops will give you a ballpark price over the phone.
3) How costly would installing a "low mileage used" replacement motor be ? Finding a suitable donor 3.0 V6 with a decent warranty will not be easy nor cheap, and the motor will still have to be removed from the car .
Replacing the motor with a new motor is certainly going to be out of the question. Find out these numbers and I think you'll see that it just isn't worth it . You could probably replace the car for much less than it would cost to fix it , also consider what other problems might surface after the work is started on the car, don't torture yourself by opening a Pandora's Box. I think it may be time to go car shopping.

You will have to pull the oil pan to find the extent of the damage, first. If you spun a rod bearing the car would have started knocking very loudly. If you IMMEDIATELY shut it down, you may not have damaged the crankshaft. Pull a couple of rod caps, if the bearings are gold in color, they are worn very badly. While you`re in there, pull a main cap and see if the bearing is gold. If it is, you need to rebuild your engine. If the main bearings are okay, and all it did was spin a rod bearing and DID NOT damage the crankshaft, you could probably get away with putting a set of rod bearings in it...if you are in a pickle and REALLY need the car. Otherwise, I would go ahead and rebuild the entire engine. (I dont trust junk yard engines.) At least if you rebuilt it yourself, you could set it up to run more boost and make more power. (If I am not mistaken and the vr-4 is the turbo model) So you could be looking at anywhere between $100 (just putting in rod bearings) and $2000 (rebuilding the engine) Anyway i hope i was of some help and Good Luck!

It is one of those things that you would answer with "how long is a peice of string"
If the crank is still fine and it is only just starting to knock you maybe able to get away with just replacing the main bearings. I would suggest however replacing all inclueding conrod bearings as these will also be worn down. If you do the work yourself it will not cost alot as bearings don't really break the bank. I am unsure of exact cost but i have had to replace these bearings before and the fast way is just to remove the sump and other parts that get in the way of it's removal. Once sump is off you can replace the bearings without removing the crank. remove big end bearing caps and you shoud beable to push the old shells around with a small screw driver, fit new ones and make sure to check clearance of the bearings with a plastic clearance gauge. once all back together make sure you replace the filter and use clean oil.

its pretty much done the rod/main bearings fail due to lack of proper lubrication or excessive wear due to tolerance(turbo engine).. fixing the bearing which may involve crankshaft replacement ...might not fix the vehicle and it will fail down the road ...ie oil pump , or blockage of a oil passage to main caps
you need a new engine ..but it doesn't get better the bearings metal shavings are probably damaging your turbo's oil supply is from the oil pan ... my estimate to repair would be over 7k usd
