He thinks he has a chance, and things tend to turn quickly.
I remember people saying that Carter didn't have a chance, and I remember them saying Clinton was done after his 3rd place finish in NH. They both won.
As far as Edwards wife, that is a personal decision, and I would not feel honest if I said his wife is knocking on Heavens door.
So is Dick Cheney, and he HOLDS office!

I think he could win, but then with what Bush has done to the GOP and fiscally conservative ideology, I think any democrat COULD win. Edwards is polling well in Iowa and many other states so I think those who say he has no chance are making meritless arguments.
Back in January 1992 everyone was saying Bill Clinton had no chance and look what happened. Similarly, in 1988 George Bush was on the cover of Time with the headline "Fighting the Wimp Factor" because he'd been labeled a wimp.
I don't think he's using his wife and I don't know that she's knocking on death's door. Lots of people survive cancer. Fred Thompson is fighting it right now as well.

It's Elizabeth Edwards choice to make the most of her remaining days as she most wants to. I find this highly admirable. You're not trying to bash the man, yet you judge that he is using his dying wife to get the sympathy vote. Get real!
Edwards has a very good chance at getting elected. Democrats from southern states have a very good record in presidential elections. Gore, the only southern Democrat to lose, actually won the popular vote and it's questionable whether he actually did lose the electoral vote. We'll never know what the recount actually would have shown. The way things are right now, it is highly unlikely that a Republican will win no matter who gets the nomination from either party.

"no chance as many people have said"
Who are these many people? Perhaps they are in the Corporate media and and have an interest in attacking someone who speaks more for working people than for the rich? Mitt Romney is worth $250 Million but you don't see that discussed like you do Edwards' haircuts and income.
"Sympathy vote"? those saying this are the ones making it an issue!
Edwards is alone in convincingly criticizing corporate-drafted trade treaties and talking about workers’ rights and the poor and higher taxes on the rich. He’s the candidate who set up a university research center on poverty. Of the front-runners in presidential polls, he’s pushing the hardest to withdraw from Iraq, and pushing the hardest on Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to follow suit.

Personally, I think John would be an excellent choice! He has more experience than Barrack Obama and less baggage than Hillary. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem whatsoever with a woman president nor do I have anything against Hillary, but I heard on the news the other day 50% of voters say they won't vote for her under ANY circumstances! Not to mention; no one motivates the Republican base quite like a Clinton!!!

Fate: honesty has little to do with my answer to this question. You are asking me to tell you why Edwards is doing what he is doing - man who can say other than himself? - we don't know why they chose to keep running. The only thing that gives me a little insight is I have a friend who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She lost her own mother to breast cancer when her mom was 42. My friend is 55. She is not restricting any activities and is trying to be "normal". I think that might be what is going on in the Edwards family - they are just trying to do "business as usual". We sit back without cancer and look in horror and think what we would do under those circumstances but you have to keep in mind life is a matter of perspective and their perspective has them campaigning. I am not so sure i would make the same decision. But I certainly support their right to decide. -k-

John Edwards is absolutely not Presidential material. I feel sorry for his wife because of her health problems. Edwards is a professional lawyer, not a leader.Yes, I think he might gets some votes because of his wife's illness, but he want get enough to win.

I don't want to and will not accuse the man of anything so cruel - but will also not dismiss the fact that it is possible............
...........you never know in politics, it can get pretty frikin crazy.
After all some look at it as if it was "King of the Mountain", every kid must have played that game before or at least know about it.
Hah...politics........games....it's all the same.
And no matter what he does..........
......it will not help him any.

No, he can not win. Hillery or Obama will.
And he is not using his wife's cancer for a sympathy vote, he is a politician and automatically gets his private life thrown into the ring.
But personally I can not vote for any of those three. That's just my opinion.

Some people feel so strongly about their country they are willing "to give their last full measure of devotion." That would seem to be the case with Edward's wife.
