These things are swarming all over the front of my house. There are so many of them that they keep triggering the motion detector and the light stays on all night. They are disgusting! They fly in your hair and land on you every time you go in or out of the house. What the heck are they? And how do I get rid of them!?!?

Here are two pictures I took. They look even more disgusting close up, but I have no other way to identify them.

Well, I wonder if you live in the midwest because that is where they are the thickest when they come. They are Cicadas and they come every 17yrs. They are perfectly harmless. Actually they are really neat and quite a phenomenom. They bury themselves in the ground and every 17 yrs they come out from the ground, shed their outer skin, and look to mate and then they go back into the ground. While they are out, they are very annoying because there are so many of them and they are really loud. They land on you but they don't bite or anything. You'll walk on them and dogs love to eat them. After a week or so, they disappear back underground for another 17yrs. Sorry that they annoy you so much but scientist are fascinated with them because it is like clockwork when they come out.

Cicadas!! They come in spurts of 5, 7 and 15 years. The Fall of 1985 was when the last big "plague" hit. You are better off just unplugging your night lights for this year since there are billions that come around every so often. They won't hurt you, but I hear they make amazing bait for fishing!!

I think this is actually a cicadellidae. These are leaf hopper insects. If the insect is rather large, like two to three inches in length, then it is a cicada, but I am willing to bet that if it is small, like less than an inch, it is a leaf hopper swarm.

look at my source for a great image of a leaf hopper

These are periodic cicadas, and they won't be around for very long. When the adults emerge in masses like they are now, they mate, lay eggs and die. In the meanwhile, you'll just have to tolerate them and be glad that it will be years before the next generation makes its appearance.

Cicada . . . they emerge in many places every 17 years. They are noisy, harmless, and will be gone soon. They leave behind crusty brown skins when they crawl out of the ground and get their wings.

Some species emerge every three to seven years.
