Look at www.symbols.com or Read the Dictionary of Symbols by Carl Luingman. Think also of images that you return to, even shapes to give you an idea of a tattoo you might want.

First figure out what you want the symbol to represent; love, strength, whatever. Then figure out what in your history would be a good symbol, I'm Mexican so I looked at Aztec style stuff. Then narrow it down and pick the one thats right for you. If you can't figure anything out, go to a tattoo parlor and ask an artist if they would be willing to sketch something out for you, they usually will take the time if you have some idea in mind.

The best thing to do is to get something that symbolizes something IMPORTANT TO YOU!
I have gotten artwork from two of my favorite books (Hunter S. Thompson's Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and Alice in Wonderland.
Find what's important to you and work from there.
If you plan on getting any sort of 'foriegn' character (e.g. Japanese, Chinese pictographs) make sure to have the meaning explained to you by at least three independant native speakers... the concepts behind this characters usually don't translate well to Western ideas and can often wind up downright embarrassing.

Well I hear ya, I felt the same when I got mine. I got a butterfly on a flower getting ready to take off on my leg and under it, it says something meaningful. I got mine because after my best friend died everywhere I moved there was a blue and yellow butterfly. the words below it don't say rip or stuff like that it was something that person said all the time that means something to me. (DIRTY WORD) long story. Point it I'll never regret it and never forget it. My next one will be of a white tiger with blue eyes. for Strength and I will get something in German or something that says STRENGTH. Look inside yourself what in your life has changed you or means something to you that you will never forget or let go of... Best wishes hope you figure it out and I hope I helped!

Type "symbol" and "meaning" into a search engine or you can choose a culture that you really like and you can look up cultural iconography, letters (i.e. kanji), and/or folklore and go from there.
However, it doesn't matter what the symbol means to the world around you; the tattoo that you get should mean something to you, so pick something close to your heart.

something happens in one's life that changes it, like the date that a child was born or someone that you really cared for died. in that case you should get a date tatooed.

One of my professors lost her nephew in an accident.
Later, she and her sister got tattoos on their arm with the lost nephew's name as an honor and memorial to his memory.
