Last year ours did the same thing. We didn't want a bill either, but ended up with one (not too bad though). Go out to your unit and look inside to see if the coil is frozen. If it is, turn off your system and let it thaw out. Change your filters and make sure you are getting enough circulation coming around the coils. Try to turn it back on (once thawed), There is a slim possibility this will work and repair man will not have to come. If it doesn't work or just freezes right back up, you need to have your freon checked. Ours had a leak, they sealed it, and put in freon, I think $120.

I am assuming you have a window unit, but some of this may apply to a central air unit. If you have central air, a professional may need to be called. On a window unit take the covers off the unit and clean the little fins on the unit. They look like a radiator in a car. Use a vacuum cleaner and a brush, perhaps a dish brush to loosen the dirt while you vacuum it up. The duster brush for the vacuum may work, but the bristles may be too soft to do the job. On the outside you may be able to use a hose and blast the fins clean but water may enter the house around the unit. If the unit has a foam rubber filter on the inside, wash it in soapy water, squeeze the excess water out of it and let it dry before replacing it.
Can you hear the compressor coming on when you switch from fan only to cooling? If not the thermostat or multi position control switch and/or circuits may need professional attention.
Dirt is most often the problem! Good Luck

Is this a central AC unit? I will assume so. Turn the temp down so it kicks on, check the compressor unit, is it running? If so then it it probably a lack of freon.
I don't think there is any way for you to work on this problem. Ask friends or neighbors if they can recommend a good repair guy. If you just call a big company out of the yellow pages that will probably cost a lot more.

If this problem is with a central unit, check and see if the drain pan under the unit is blocked and not draining properly. Usually if this is so then it needs to be drained, and flushed out with bleach to kill the bacteria. Also check all the filters , in the returns too make sure they have been change or cleaned. Recommend that you put the date on them a change at least once a month.
