yes i can spell neglect just a typing error , it is a sensible question, say a parent leaves their child unattended in a home, hotel and it catches on fire and their children perish in the fire would they not be charged? parents do not put their children to bed and then leave , it very irresponsible , i don't understand why this is so hard for people to understand?

all i am saying is that we live in a evil world where our children are not safe, we should not allow an open window of opportunity for sick people to get to our kids. they should be held responsible for leaving 3 children unattended in a strange place (any place) i hope that they find her safe but no matter what the out come is the parents are at fault to a degree of neglect .

I will never support such irresponsible parents. I will, however, pray that the child makes it home safely, and that she is put into a new home where her guardians aren't dumb enough to leave her and two others in an unlocked room by themselves while vacationing in a foreign land.

I hope that, whatever happens, these people are prosecuted within the full extent of the law. If it is found that the child has been murdered, then I think that the parents should be charged with murder themselves.

If it was just because they made such a horrendous mistake, I probably wouldn't feel this way. The way they've been jetting around, turning their child's abduction into an opportunity to extend their vacation (shaking hands with the pope, etc...) I feel that they are getting too much enjoyment of this dilemna. The fact that I have yet to see a red eye amongst the two makes things even worse.

Just a thought, perhaps...and this has nothing to do with feeling sorry for the little girl or wishing her safe (I feel that goes without saying, poor baby). But if her mother was a single parent, with no viable help with child care and Madeleine had been taken while being left ALONE with younger siblings, how much time do you think it would be before the mother were behind bars and the other children were in the foster care system??? If the building the children were in had caught fire, would this outpouring be the same or would people (justifiably, in my opinion) be screaming about the fact they left a FOUR year old unattended???
Yes, I wish Maddy safety and love but I don't honestly think either of those things come from either of these parents, who obviously care more about having their faces plastered all over the world by the media than in getting her back safely.
YES! Resoundingly! They were neglectful and should spend the rest of their days behind bars and be STERILIZED so this can't happen again, not to mention never letting them near the other two children. Shame on anyone who feels sorry for them!!! THEY left her alone, after all. If they were real parents who cared about her safety, they'd not have been off at a restaurant and leaving a LITTLE child without necessary care!

First of all, Ryan, I would like to say that you sound like a very nice, very intelligent and very well educated man. Your question was well written with very few spelling or grammatical mistakes if any (the magic of spellcheck, etc.?) and all I can say is that, however wrong your mother might be about some things, she must have done something right with you. I don't think there would be any laws against what your mother is doing, unless you might wish to get her in trouble with the welfare people. Technically, she is supposed to report any income, so, actually, that might be a tack you can take to get her to back down on the rent hike. Frankly, I wouldn't, though. If your mother is halfway decent in some ways, do you wish to get her in trouble? And I wouldn't threaten to do something you're not really going to do. But you could always mention it as sort of an aside. Just a whiff of your understanding that something is fishy here could help your mother come down to earth. However, remember ... there is no law against your moving out either, as far as I know. Where I live, $500 would definitely get you to be one half of a share, or a quarter of a college apartment or something. It seems a little unfair what your mom is doing because could make it harder for you to pursue your goals if you haven't finished college or are planning to go or are wanting to start a business ... anything.

I doubt if they'll face criminal charges in these circumstances but I'd feel a lot more sympathetic if they would acknowledge that they shouldn't have left the children. If they were using this publicity as an opportunity to warn other parents - "don't do what we did - children are too precious to take risks with", that sort of thing, then I think there'd be a lot less criticism of them as parents. I suppose it's damage limitation and probably what their lawyers are advising them to say but this downplaying of their culpability only makes them sound neglectful.

Interesting that the official suspect Robert Murat is having to deny that he's accused them of neglect . He was quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "It may sound harsh, but if anyone has broken the law, then the McCanns have. Portuguese law says that you cannot leave young children unattended.

"They say they were eating in the complex but actually the apartment was outside across an alley, so, I'm sorry, but they broke the law."

Sounds like a reasonable point to make.

i think there defiantly needs to be an investigation into the parents. whether or not "lots of people do it" is not the point. if you are caught speeding you cant say lots of people do it and hope to get away with it you deal with the consequences. yes everyone makes mistakes but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be punished for them if they end up like this surely they knew the risks of leaving 3 small children alone

They SHOULD be but won't.

Instead they will no doubt be rewarded with becoming Z list celebs who appear on everything.

Yes, I am aware that a kid is missing and I do feel sorry for them - However, They left their kids along WHY !!! ????

They are also shooting themselves in the foot. Yes, its important that she is kept in the public eye - however, people are getting bored about it especally as there is not a lot that they can do. And what about all the other kids that will go missing today? Will they get the same coverage? Will they have funds set up for them?

In my opinion yes they should be charged with neglect because that is exactly what they did, dress it up how you will but it's still neglectful to leave three under 4 year old's unattended. Anyone else would be charged, say you had a neighbour who was going out and leaving her kids, if you reported her then she would be charged with neglect.

I agree with Faith and it seems like a cruel witch hunt by some people who will simply say we can voice our opinion. but is it an opinion, I very much doubt it.
Don't know if the parents will be charged with neglect.
One needs to have eyes in the back of their heads these days, and it is not always possible to watch our children's every move.
My question is why should we have to live like this in today's world?
Where is the punishment to fit the crime?

well if they hadnt left the kid alone, then she wouldnt have been taken, so it is there fault, u cant trust anyone these days so a child should never be left.
So I think they should be charged.
I hope the little girl is found.
