The Great Wall of China (Traditional Chinese: 長城; Simplified Chinese: 长城; Pinyin: Chángchéng; literally "long wall") or (Traditional Chinese: 萬里長城; Simplified Chinese: 万里长城; Pinyin: Wànlǐ Chángchéng; literally "The long wall of 10,000 miles (里)" is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in China, built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties.
Who built The Great Wall?
Several walls, referred to as the Great Wall of China, were built since the 5th century BC, the most famous being the one built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the first Emperor of China named "Qin Shi Huang". That wall was much further north than the current wall, built during the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains.
The Great Wall is one of the existing megastructures and the world's longest human-made structure, stretching over approximately 6,400 km (4,000 miles) from Shanghai Pass in the east to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia.
It is also the LONGEST & LARGEST human-made structure ever built in terms of surface area and mass till this century.

www.travelchinaguide.com/china_great_wall will give you more info than the following, but here are a few facts I wrote down to answer your questions partially (I hope): The wall was built over 2,000 years ago as defense fortifications by the warring states of YAN, QIN, & ZHAO, and began as separate, independent walls. It didn't become the Great Wall until the Qin Dynasty when the emperor succeeded in his efforts to have all the walls joined together to fend off invasions from the HUNS and other nomadic tribes from the north after the unification of China. A literal army of soldiers, prisoners, and local residents used materials found locally to build it between the 7th and 8th centuries BC. The rulers of the MING Dynasty renovated the wall 18 times, and it is considered one of the great wonders today because of the way it was constructed--with towers, tunnels, etc. It stretches 4,163 miles from east to west over mountains, valleys, plains, etc. at a height of 10 meters (or about 375 feet).
