There is nothing we, the ragged trousered philanthropists, can do about the dumbing down of society. If society is free, it must be free to dumb itself down if it wants to.

In England far more people read the Daily Mirror than the Observer. It's their choice.
Big Brother is more popular than Panorama.
Bingo is more popular than Chess.
Manchester United is more popular than Portsmouth.
Cynical comment is more popular than constructive action.
Gossip is more popular than lively debate.
The list goes on and on. It's what people choose to do.

The only people who can do something about the dumbing down of society, are the extraordinary people. The people with extraordinary talents and skills to lift society out of its rut and make us all feel life is worth living. The John Lennons, the David Hockneys, the Judi Denches, the Ken Livingstons, whoever takes your fancy.

I can blame our educational system, and a can blame our 'politically correct' officialdom for suppressing talent and suppressing excellence, and I believe that is why society is being dumbed down.

I only realised in the last two years that major (and quite minor) decisions that impact my daily life, whether it is how the Government plan to build roads to where I am going to go for drinks on a Friday are made by muppets. I didn't realize that the dumb had inherited the earth.

Anyway in answer to your question. On the spot quizzes are the answer, anyone who fails to get 80% or more has an electric shock applied to their nards (Bollocks if you're a bloke) and an automatic retest after 4 weeks.

Ordinary people are doing it all the time.
Try - not allowing bad language or derogatory comments to be spoken in your presence , especially in your house.
Don't subscribe to mags and newspapers that publish tat. Don't watch programmes, music videos, films that are smutty or puerile.
The silent majority can make a difference if you think about it. Silence is very powerful. It cannot be silenced and what is more silent than an unread newspaper, a TV not switched on a CD not bought or a vile thought left unspoken?

It is no more apparent than in the election of George Bush. I seriously believe that the majority of Americans are dangerously uninformed about serious issues, and I would be a hypocrite if I didn't include myself in that group (although maybe not as underinformed as many others). When journalism crosses paths with business and capitalism, the American people lose out. We need to stop caring about Hollywood and American Idol. Our world is deteriorating before our very eyes - global warming, war, oil dependency - and we are not doing enough to stop the bleeding.

One way is to read classic novels, go the The Proms, and become ever more discerning as an individual. Make your own choices, and that way it becomes more a process of taking what is right for you in what you like to listen to, read about, go to, etc. In other words, don't demand better standards, but actually become them yourself. Then, you become a better person.
