83 Honda Shadow 500 Bike starts up fine when cold(over and over), when warm, nothing. Same spark cold or hot, new battery. It will crank over and over but nothing until it sits for about 10-15 minutes and then it will fire right up again.

Fuel is evaporating in the fuel lines, there must be a purge valve somewhere that is not working properly.

Well, without directly investigating the problem, all we can do is give suggestions as to what it could possibly be, so I hope this helps.

1) Have the carbs been cleaned? Is the right amount of fuel reaching the cylinders? Or is it sending too much fuel and causing it to flood?

2) Have the spark plugs been changed? And make sure they're the right type for your bike. You may want to run hotter plugs.

3) Test the spark plug wires to see if you're getting all the juice your battery can provide. Especially when hot. Check for damage or poor electron flow.

4) Do a compression test on your bike when its hot. Metals such as piston rings, valves, etc, may be the culprit, especially on older bikes.

If all else fails, take the bike into a shop you trust.
Good luck! :)

Are you getting spark from both coils when it's hot.
Kawasaki 750 Vulcans had that problem.
Also the air gap for the pulse coils were a little tight.
They're not adjustable, so the mounting holes had to be enlarged.
And I don't think the air gap specs are in the shop manual.
I got them from the Kawasaki tech line.
Purchase a shop manual for the "peek voltage" specs and check the pulse generator.
It will still allow the spark plugs to fire, but the timing of the pulse generator could be a little off, or not producing the correct voltage to fire the coils properly.

I just asked this question. I literally have the same exact problem with my 2000 Yamaha R6. I want to know what the problem is also. Its embarassing when you to get gas and your bike wont start again. If my temp gauge is over 175 it just wont start. I just charged my battery and replace the air filter and still the same thing. So i hope someone answers.

Check the compression when it is hot. The valves may need adjusted and or the rings and cylinder worn.
