Squirrels start mating when they are a year old. It takes about six weeks from the time the squirrels mate until the baby squirrels, called kittens, are born. Twice a year, in the spring and at the end of the summer, the female squirrel has two to five kittens.

Some species of squirrels do reproduce only once a year

Well, when they are old enough, the boy squirrel chases the girl squirrel around until she lets him mate with her. Then she is pregnant, and maybe 3 weeks later she has her babies in a nest she has prepared in a safe hole somewhere. She usually has a bunch of babies at one time. They are born naked and blind and she feeds them milk from her teats. She sits on them to keep them warm, if needed. They grow fur and open their eyes and soon they are running all over the place finding their own food. Soon after that the mom squirrel will probably mate again and have more babies.

They're mammals, so they reproduce sexually, just like all their other warm-blooded, live birthing little friends.
