Comon people seriously it depends on where you live please give more info so the correct advise can be given, I can't believe all these so called herpetologists are giving advise like this.

You can not identify a snake by colour, only by a scale count and there is not enough info to even know anything as wisely pointed out before.

Really people you could cost someone their life, lets get serious. Wow I am astonished, some one could die here if bitten from bad advise.

This sounds like a perfect description of an Eastern, or Chain Kingsnake, Lampropeltis getullus, one of the most common, and most-beneficial, non-venomous snakes. These will actually kill and eat other snakes, including venomous species, and are immune to their prey's venomous bites. The patterns on the Eastern Kings can vary a good bit, and the color of the stripes can also vary from pure white, to off-white, to bright lemon yellow, as can the width of the stripes. Some Kings have narrow stripes, while others have very wide ones. These snakes are not only harmless to humans, but are often very docile, not even attempting to bite when just picked up off the ground, as it were. I've bred these for several years now, and I would definately recommend these as a great pet snake, even for a beginner. By the way, absolutely NO snake is going to go after you, or "kill you in your sleep", NONE, zero, zilch. Snakes just do not do that, except in stupid movies aimed at making money off even-stupider people. You're not "up against" anything, except ignorance and the fear it creates. By the way, the last two pics are of my babies that I hatched out from my pair of Eastern Kings last year.

You don't even say where you are, so how do I know what lives there?
Anyway.
If the stripes are lengthwise, the snake is not poisonous.
If the stripes are crossways, it might be that you don't notice the red stripes in the dark. In that case it could be a coral snake or a king snake, depending on where you are. Coral snakes are poisonous but shy. They make a pop sound before striking. If you make noise they will go away. (So will any snake for that matter.) King snakes are not poisonous, and they eat poisonous snakes. To tell a king snake from a coral snake the rule is:
Red touch yellow, kill a fellow;
Red touch black, friend of Jack.

90 % of all snakes are harmless
they are infact good ,eating vermin
like moles,rats,mice etc
the tiny ones eat insects
if they have a very wide head they could be vipers
these are very dangerous .
But most snakes are long gone by the time you get near ,
they feel the vibrations of you walking like we feel a dinosaurs coming ,they feel with their whole body
So dont freak out too much
if it stands up and rattles or hishes or spits at you get out of the way.

which way do the stripes go ,if they are rings around the body it might be a corral snake but there is also a harmless one depending on how many colors the rings are
lenthways stripes ,dont worry go to sleep easily.

it was probably a king snake they eat venomous snakes and any type of small animal they are not poisonous themselves, and you might wanna get it into the woods (note -pick up the snake by it's neck and toss it outside/in the woods
