Since the weather has been heating up, we've been getting these bugs in our house that look like craneflies but bigger and with large, reddish-brown bodies. I'm curious as to what they are and if they bite/sting/could be harmful, or if they're just freaky looking.

Er.. not mayflies either.. they're bigger than craneflies.

There are different species of crane flies. Here's one that might fit your description.

The pic you posted looks like a mayfly to me. There are a bunch of different types. Here are some pictures.

They're completely harmless.
