...does the frantic nervousness that comes with the thought that you will never ever smoke another cigarette again ever go away? and does missing the "hand to mouth" motion ever go away either? please tell me that the sadness i feel for my old and dear friend, virginia tobacco, will go away soon....

Hang in there, Hon. You can do it. Just don't go back. It kills you.... I was such a Daddy's girl. I loved my Dad. He was the most amazing man. He always came to my rescue at times in my life when I needed him the most. The hardest part of my life was watching this strong, vibrant, sargeant in the Army kind of guy... lay in a bed with a machine pushing air into his lungs...and know that I couldn't save him just this once. He died because of those cigarettes that he smoked those years. I smoked too...and I walked away and never looked back. Did I miss it? Yes. I just wish he would have stopped long ago and could be here now...still being my hero...still rescuing me when I need him most. Good luck!

Out of the 10 people I know who have quit only 2 have gone back to smoking but after several years. I quit 4 months ago and hope I never smoke again. I know that if I do take One puff I will probably start again, so I'm just gonna stay away completely. For those looking to quit I highly recommend the patch......they really did help me. I could only use them for the first 3 or 4 weeks (because I got allergic to the adhesive) but they helped a lot.

I quit 8 years ago. It was one of the best things I ever did. Sure, I gained 10 pounds and it never really came off, but I don't want to be thin just for my casket.

I still get cravings, especially under high stress. It's nothing a beer won't cure.

I play with pens a lot, still, because I get the same thing - needing the hand to mouth motion.

I carry a wicked Zippo lighter, and keep it maintained, just because. I even light other people's cigs with it, but I haven't lit up in 8 years.

I miss smoking. I hate movies with smokers because it makes me want some. But, I could never go back. I've watched someone die of lung cancer. You should put that on your list of ways you do not want to die. Right up there with scaphism and slowly roasting over a smokeless fire.

It will go away. Just keep telling yourself you are stronger then the addiction and this too will pass. Don't let the addiction win. When you face the enemy straight on and admit what it is, you can deal with the craving better. It is not your friend and will kill you if you do not stop. I know for a fact. My mom died in 2001 from lung cancer. Her lung collapsed before she even knew she had a cancer. She never got strong enough to get chemo and it spread to her brain. She stopped smoking to late. Don't make the same mistake.

In the first six weeks you wont be yourself. You will be cranky, you'll eat a lot, you will want to smoke but I quit 2 years ago and I dont ever plan on smoking again. You have to commit 100% and it will make it easier. I prayed about it and put it in Gods hands and the cravings never took me.

It took longer than I thought it would, but eventually, yes, it does go away.

I quit smoking on New Years Day 1979. Haven't had a cigarette since.

You can kick the habit, too. Just hang tough. You can do it. Time is your ally. The longer you go without, the closer you are to winning.

i quit smoking over 23 years ago. you have to remember that it takes about 6 weeks for the nicotine to get out of your body. the cravings will soon go away also; however, the HABIT of moving your arms and the smoking movements will start to go away when you start to catch yourself doing them and force yourself to stop. a habit like smoking is a large part of your life and quiting requires a life style change also.

Yes, the habit goes away. It takes a looooonnnnnnng time, but one day, you'll notice that someone else is smoking and you don't care.

In the meantime, chew gum, use chapstick, or grow a mustache to stroke to keep your hands/mouth busy.
