The African butterfly is a surface-dwelling fish that gets to be about 4". Ideal temperature is between 74 and 84 degrees and can be kept in any numbers.
They can be predatory to smaller fish like guppies or neon tetras. They don't bother with fish who swim no the bottom (corydoras, etc) or who are mid-level swimmers. Tankmates include gouramis, angelfish, kribensis (kribs), ropefish, corys, swordtails..to name a few.
You can keep 2 or 3 in a 30 gallon tank. They need calm, clean water (avoiding strong power filters at the surface for obvious reasons!) and floating vegetation. They are jumpers and need a tight cover.
They eat whole or chopped worms, frozen shrimp, frozen plankton, mosquito larvae (bloodworms), small crickets or live guppies in the aquarium setting. In the wild, they eat mainly small surface dwelling fish and insects. They eat from the surface and can sometimes be difficult to feed. They live about 4 yrs.
While breeding the African Butterfly Fish is not a common occurrence in the aquarium, it has been done. The male fish is distinguished by its larger pectoral fins in relation to its body and the appearance of its anal fin which has an uneven trailing edge. The female's anal fin, by comparison, has a nearly straight trailing edge. If the fish are viewed from above, the difference in the size of the pectoral fins becomes more obvious.
They scatter a number of pale yellowish-colored eggs in some plants at the water's surface. The eggs take a week to hatch.

I'll add another website to the ones MM gave you: http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/breeding/Gallo_Butterflyfish.html

They're predators, so a good "treat" are a few small live crickets. They won't eat sinking foods, and keep a cover on the tank - they're jumpers! Don't keep with other surface fish - they'll be eaten or harrassed by your butterflies depending on their size.
