Because there are historical records kept. And this was a popular food source back then. Its a big bird that can feed alot of people, so it was smarter to eat themm plus they are native to this country.

turkey is a bird native to north america,,,it's quite likely that they were eaten...i'm pretty sure that they did mention what they ate...
thanksgiving trivia...almost all of the foods associated with the 'traditional thanksgiving meal' are native to north america...and the first thanksgiving had no pilgrims in attendance-it was celebrated in what is now charles city county, virginia, over a decade before the pilgrims left england...

I just know that there were wild turkeys in the area. They also had eels and other types of seafood. They also had corn(maize) and cranberries. These were some of the food available in the area at that time.

Turkey was one of the most common game birds in that part of the world at that time.
