well the answerer 2nd above me has a point. but we would know because I am sure the tides in our oceans would be out of place, and maybe even our seizmic shift. the earth spins at 1000 mph. it if came to a complete stop, I am sure there would be catastrophic occurances. if a plate shifts a few cintimeters and cause a mayjor earthquake. if the earth halts from 1000mph - 0mph for 1 minut. that is a dirastic change for the earth.

Many very good answers. Mine is what I believe to be true. If the earth were to stop spinning, it would not affect time, however it would jolt every item on the planet in a reverse pattern. Trees would fall as would we and it would bring about a unimaginable change in both the electromagnetism of what was, in addition to the gravitational equality that we enjoy from our moon.

The seas would immediately flood all land and I would extrapolate that life would cease to exist as we know it. Since the earth revolves so fast, approximately .05 km per second, stopping this revolution would crumble all buildings, people and mountains. It would change the dynamics of the entire planet.

Stopping the revolution that exists would project forcefully every structure and living being on the planet and throwing it for thousands of miles; if not completely around the planet many times over. An analogy would be not so different as being in a car traveling at 20,000 miles per hour and suddenly stopping it. The inertia of the car would eject the passengers.

The question is riveting and challenging. However the preponderance of evidence of speed and kinetic energy suggests that stopping any body, including earth would be a catastrophe of the magnitude that would be difficult to determine. It is also possible that the lack of the earth spinning would draw it closer to the gravity of the sun.

As seen in the marvelous science documentary "Superman" starring the late Christopher Reeve, if the Earth started spinning backward, time would reverse itself and earthquakes would get all fixed up. So if the Earth stopped spinning, instead of spinning backward, time would have to be in between forward and backward, which is either sideways or stopped.

If you consider from the perspective of an alien in another galaxy, for example, Yoda, how would he know whether the Earth had started spinning in the other direction, or had stopped spinning? He wouldn't, because Earth would be very far away from him, too small to see. So not much would happen to the passage of time, because if it did, how would he explain it? Time just suddenly goes slower, or stops, for no reason? That's not too likely.

No, because time does not only exist on the earth. For example if mars was stopped for a minute it would not affect what happens on earth. So if the world stopped spinning time would be unaffected. We may all be killed by catastrophic earthquakes, but time would continue without human existence.

In accordance with the relativity theory time is a sequence of of physical events that take place in space. So, if the Earth would stop turning around its axis, time would not stop, because other physical objects in the Universe would not stop moving. In order to stop the time, all matter in the Universe would have to come to a complete freeze. But, the question is - how would you know that it has or not?

That would be sweet, but I don't think so. Sorry. I don't think it would be a good thing though. I pretty sure what would happen is that the earth would fall off its axis, and total hell would break loose!
