A player only has options at the beginning of his first ML contract (i believe the first 3 years)
It means that he can be sent down to the minor leagues without having to clear waivers.
p.s. Can you change a rating if you hit the wrong button?

When he's out of options, if he gets sent back down to the minors other teams can steal him.

if he has been on the 40 man roster for 3 out of his first 6 years he cannot be sent down to the minors keep him , release him or ask waivers...you can get him back if he clears waivers....then you can send him down before non-waiver trading deadline....after that, waivers again...I only know cuz i asked today....this question popped up...did you get the answer in the past 9 years?
