Well, for one thing, RELAX! Try not to think about not being able to fall asleep again like the night before. Taking some deep breaths and stretching to clear your mind and relax your muscles will help. I generally don't like sleep medicines so instead, I warm up some milk (not hot but warm) and add some honey (sweeten to your liking) and drink it before bedtime (I make it and drink it before brushing my teeth and putting things away right before bed, anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes). I do this and everyone I have ever recommended it to has made it a ritual! I hope it helps! Good luck and good night!!! =)

I've had that problem before, myself, and it seems that once it happens one night - I was doomed to many more nights of the same thing.
What has worked for me is getting into a daily routine of:
Exercise, eating low glycemic-index foods, drinking lots of water during the day and no caffiene, stretching and relaxation before bed, a regular nightly bed-time, and being attentive throughout the day to what I feel and think and actively resolving any conflicts as they occur.
I also make it a practice to leave work at work.
I make my home my sanctuary.
Before bed I generally take some time to sit, breathe fully, and let my mind gently relax. Thoughts come up and I let them go.
It takes practice, but it has worked wonders for me.
I have tried Simply Sleep and it worked, without a morning hang-over, but I do not like taking any medications.
I have tried warm milk, but ended up having to get up several times in the night to pee...
For me, instead of a carb before bedtime, I prefer a small serving of protein like a few nuts, a couple slices of turkey pastrami, or even a scrambled egg.
There are wonderful bedtime CDs available with guided meditations to help you relax, and sleeping music.
It also helps to have a cat that likes to snuggle. There is nothing like a sleeping cat to give you an image of total relaxation and comfort.
Hope this helps.
And don't get after yourself about this difficulty. It is what it is.

I know exactly how you feel!
1] limit caffiene intake - no more than 2 servings a day, and none after noon
2] exercise in AM or afternoon - not after 6 PM
3] eat dinner about 4 hours before bedtime - no heavy foods after this - a veg, or fruit, or small regular yogurt is OK
4] don't watch news after dinner, and no TV an hour before bed - no TV or computers in bedrooms!
5] try chamomile, Celestial Seasons Sleepytime, or Bigelow's Sweet Dreams [ my favorite ] tea.
6] do gentle stretching or yoga before sleep
7] take a hot bath or shower
8] read something boring, do crosswords, or Sudoku [ gauranteed to make you tired! ]
9] say your prayers - that worked when we were kids!
10] make lists, replant you garden in your head, re-decorate your house, plan how to spend a million dollars,...
Try all this for two weeks, so your body gets used to the routine. If no good results,
a] take melatonin [ available in health food/supplements ]
b] take Benadryl, or the generic drugstore brand
c] consult a doctor - you may need a sleep study

I guess you could take some type of night time medicine but why do that when a glass of wine or EVEN a warm glass of milk would do the trick. At least try the warm milk! It wont hurt you to try it since your not sleeping anyway right!

before you go to bed to help you sleep dont watch TV or a bright screen, try deep relaxing breaths, drink a warm beverage (no caffine), slowly stretching/ yoga, and clearing your mind. but when trying to clear your mind dont try to hard because then its frustrating and you'll end up filling your head more than before you started. or listen to relaxing music.

I buy simply sleep at walmart and it works great. You don't get that hungover feeling the next day either.
