y = x^2 - 2

is a parabola. It's oriented vertically, which is to say that there is a vertical axis around which you could flip it and it would look the same. The lowest point on the curve is at x = 0, so that's where you will find the axis of symmetry: the y-axis that passes through x = 0.

well, to answer that, you would have too know what symmetry means. I am assuming you do since you have to do this problem. First, it helps to graph the parabola (until you get the hang of visualising the graph in your mind accurately). Basically, the Axis of Symmetry is just the line along which would perfectly "cut" the original graph. Since there is no horizontal shift, the vertex, or the point the graph would start from, is (0,-2). That makes this problem much easier. All you need to do is find the vertex, and draw a line that goes straight up and down (or left and right for y^2 equations). So, you will find that the a\Axis of Symmetry of this parabola is X=0. draw both equations, you'll see it. have funn ;)

How many ways can you spell symmetry? The axis is the vertical line which would act like a "mirror", in that the parabola on one side would look exactly like the parabola on the other side.
For this relation, the axis is x=0.

The axis of symmetry is x=0.
This is the line which cuts the curve into two parts which are mirror images of each other.

The way you do this is as follows. Get the zeros, add them, and divide by 2.
