I'm wondering if your government has a effective plan that helps or supports surviving family members of convicts executed for various reasons (capital murder, rape, etc); specifically, spouses who are about to become widowed, and children who are about to lose a parent or become orphaned due to capital punishment.

If you do have a plan or legal procedure, what is it? If not, are you currently putting one into effect or planning to develop one in the near future?

I live in California and as far as I know we do not have
such a plan, but normally a prisoner that has received
the death penalty spend 20 to 25 years waiting for that
sentence to be carried out.

I do feel sorry for the wife and kids, but the reality is, it was
her husband that put her into this situation, if there were
children at the time of the crime, she would have been
able to apply for assistance and receive food stamps
welfare and other help, this and the cost of incarceration
is paid for my the citizens of the State. Once the kids
are grown she may still be entitled to assistance if she
is unable to work.

I sure hope that they don't plan on giving any support just because a legal punishment changed somebody's status.

If somebody's murderous rapist relative wanted to be a real stand up individual, they could waive their endless legal appeals and ask that the State donate a portion of the money they would have spent upholding their conviction and put it into an education fund for their kids.

That would still be profiting from a felony though, so I doubt the idea would ever fly.

If they were really worried about what was to become of their families....maybe they should have done something other than kill someone else....and ruin that person's dreams for the future of their family.

I'd actually vote any elected official out of office that tried to put a plan such as you are proposing into place, just for convicted criminals.

PG, America pays people not to work, its called Welfare and it's alive and well.

This is America where the victim is put on trial and dissected under a microscope. The criminal is given carte blance and a slap on the wrist. In many states, you can be out in 8 years after committing murder.

I wish America was at the least ~governed by responsible, role model citizens.

But alas, it's not. It's about to be run by Mexicans, or already is.

No plan. There should not be one. This is not a socialistic country, we do not pay people not to work. There is a place for that, it is called France, also Germany. It seems to me that the people who are often executed failed to consider the consequences of their actions, and failed to think about the families of their victims, so I have a hard time feeling sorry for them. If they failed to consider their Vitim's, then it stands to reason that they likely did not provide provisions for their families should they be caught. I feel nothing for them, sorry. Justice, retribution, whatever, they did the crime, they, not society should have thought of the needs of their family before, not after the act.

How would the wife/kids be supported by this person while incarcerated?

At least when they are dead the rest of the country doesn't have to pay to lock them up.

Don't do the crime if you don't want to die.

It is simple to follow laws, and we should not have to pay for anothers stupidity, so let them fry.

The soldier below me has a great answer, kudos.

They get welfare benefits. I realize that it is not their fault (for the most part), that they were involved with a criminal, but they are better off without that poison in their life anyway!
I fully support the death penalty!
Why should we pay to support a murder in prison for the rest of his life!!!There are a lot better things my tax dollars could go for!!

Why, may I ask, should any state or government provide support to them? If their husband/father was a low life and did the crime, he deserves the punishment and if he leaves behind a family, they should count their blessings he's going down.
