If you want to try something more akin to the newer games that are coming out these days, I'd recommend Ticket to Ride. It's a moderately light game that you can play with your friends or family. It's a train game and you have to build routes between cities in the US and Canada. A good amount of strategy and easy to learn.

Risk is an old classic, Balderdish and Trivial Pursuit are newer classics.

I have cadoo, turbo edition, zooreka, that little card game thing with the wierdest name that I cant remember...
If you want educational, try mastermind. it is a game where one person makes a code and the other person has to guess the same code. hope i helped xD
