Eddie Van Halen is a guitar virtuoso. Some of the other players mentioned make more noise than music. Van Halen is a classically trained musician who invented his own guitars and the Brown Sound.

Other great guitarists are: Angus Young, both Schenker Bros. Stevie Ray Vaughn and Kenny Wayne Shepherd

LOL, Ted Nugent once set up a rig exactly like Eddie Van Halen's and tried as hard as he could to sound the same. He gave up admitting he could not do it.

OK... first of all, I actually AM a guitarist, so I do have a notion of who are the great ones. It isn't possible to say who the best is - how do you compare a Julian Bream (classical) to Zakk Wylde? Jimi Hendrix was definitely one of the best that ever was, Walter Trout is a very good blues-rock guitarist, Joe Bonamassa is (IMHO) the best blues-rock guitar player around (I rate myself about 70% of where he is), Eddie Van Halen is excellent, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli John Roth... the good news is that there are a LOT of great guitarists around these days, and someday I hope to be considered one of them!

Only because of his mad man style and macho man image, Ted Nugent has been overlooked as one of the top 5 guitar players in the world. Even at that Ted is always in the top 20 or better. So, My first choice is Ted Nugent. Any hard rock fan should take a chance and buy Ted Nugent's self titled first album. Which is full of great songs. You will not be disappointed. I guarantee it.
Now for my list,
Ted Nugent
Joe Perry
Eddie Van Halen
Jimmy Page
