there are 3 moments in history when chile became a democracy or an improved version of it. first was after the independence, which was gained in 1810 from the spaniards. but then only wealthy men, not women, could vote. universal vote came in 1952, when women gained voting rights.
then in 1973 came the coup d'etat and democratically elected socialist president allende committed suicide. he was actually very close to havana and the ussr, a communist that had the country starving, so not a big loss anyway - good riddance actually!! until 1990 the country was ruled by general pinochet. it was a dictatorship and he was a butcher - killed like 3k people and tortured many more. in october 5, 1988, there was a popular consultation on whether chileans wanted more of the dictatorship -which was very good for the economy, though- or not. they voted no. preparations began then to transfer the power to a civilian, democratically elected govt. the elections took place in 1989 and patricio aylwin, a wanker from the christian democratic party, won. he took power from pinochet in march 11, 1990. so far there have been three more elected presidents, all of them from the leftist center coalition that defeated the butcher almost 2 decades ago.
