Making friends is not a game or race that can be won or lost. A true friendship is a mutual respect and liking built on trust and understanding between two people. A friendship is fostered when both parties are true to themselves and with eachother and share some common interest, value or cause.
I didn't mean to sound so philosophical there, I tend to get "proper" when I'm tired.

Dale Carnegie wrote an excellent book on this very subject years ago ("How to Win Friends and Influence People"). It is a true classic. Pick up a copy, read it, and apply the lessons it contains. They work.
