You've either got too many things starting up, your HDD is pooched or you've got a runaway process.

Do an MSCONFIG and remove everything you don't need. For your spyware & virus checkers, don't have them do a startup scan as this takes precious time to complete. If that doesn't work, do a scandisk and see if there's a problem with your HDD. I doubt that's it but you can never be too careful.

The other possiblity is your system might be underpowered for what you have loaded. I would assume this slowdown is a recent phenomenon? If not you need more memory and possibly a faster CPU.

Failure is not an option... It comes bundled with Windows and you cannot uninstall it!!!

From my personal experience, I can tell you that windows has a shelf life. I have to format my hard drive on my Windows XP system at least once a year to get rid of spyware and other junk that those removal tools cannot quell. I recommend that you backup all of the items you wish to keep. Format your hard drive and restore it to factory condition. This works for me every time and is less time consuming for me.

I keep backups of all of my software, so if windows starts acting up and i do not feel like spending a whole day trying to root out a problem with a virus or spyware, this is the route I employ and it works for me.

You will find that after a fresh install everything will run much smoother and you will be happier with it's performance. I still have a 233mhz laptop with 64 megs of ram that works efficently... so it does not matter how fast the computer is. The key is to keep your hard drive in good shape...

THE COMPUTER WILL BE SLOW IF THE HARD DRIVE HAS TO WORK HARDER TO FIND THE FILES...

Defrag hard drive weekly
update windows weekly
spyware and antivirus tools are recommended
and a good firewall

I hope this helps.

I was having the same problems and my PC was crashing a lot too.
Go to
http://www.incodesolutions.com/removeit.php

download RemoveIT Pro v4 run that and do what it says to get rid of the things that are slowing down your computer. I run 3 different spy ware programs and none of them detected the 17 worm viruses and 2 Trojans on my PC

First RAM, then the CPU.

With so little RAM, it is swapping to hard drive ALL THE TIME, which is why it's so slow.

Go to 1 GB, and you'll be booting up in 2 minutes.

It will depend on what lies past that mountain. Every step will lead you past that mountain, however then all of it need to no longer pass in useless. Its no longer continuously that the hardest of demanding situations offers you the fine of outcome. You need to recognize what lies at the back of that mountain, and simplest climb if its valued at it. PS: Not continuously will have to you climb the mountains; routinely its well to make use of the valleys.

Its it a combination of both the small amount of RAM (512MB is recommended for XP, 1GB for Vista) and the fact that now-a-days you need a processor above 2.0GHz for smooth performance.
