I am an M.o.T tester in the u.k.
Any thing on the windscreen larger than a 40mm circle outside a 280mm wide vertical strip directly infront of the driver (other than the tax holder or certain authority stickers) or, a 10mm circle inside the strip are failures if it is not a design feature of the vehicle.
Obviously other countrys have different law`s.

You need to follow your state's guidelines for the measurements of how wide the tinting can be, and also, the depth of tint. Usually the Dept of Transportation has that info, the State Patrol may have it, as well. After market decals that say the make of the car, can only be 6inches wide in most states, although they are sold 9inches wide. You still have to go by your states rules/regs, or you will be ticketed.

UK answer! Screen and front windows must let 75% of light through. Occasionally they set up road stops with test facilities, but often it's the opinion of the officer that counts. Sun strips must not interfere with your ability to drive the vehicle safely, again opinion counts!
