Cuba was a Banana Republic while Batista was in power. Castro came to power long before the cold war ended.
Castro may have depended upon the Soviet Union for aid because we were not wise enough to give it to him, but he was never a puppet of anyone or any government.

Fidel has done some good things for his country , but most have benefited himself. I have been there and people do not have the freedom of speech ,the right to own a business, human rights , the right to own a computer or Internet or cell phone. The Cuban people are very nice and capable people , Fidel and his governments succeeding him are idiots and I hope they are thrown in jail and overthrown.
Fidel was a brainwashing machine puppet to his own people.
