Not any specific kind of genius, and don't ask the dictionary for help. I want to hear from real people what their own, unfiltered definition of true genius is.

i think genius is accepting th obvious. For example;

The European/american mathematician kurt Godel "startled"
the scientific world in the 1930's by proving that arithmetic is
"incomplete".
Why should such a group of men be startled
so? I think he was (also) re-stating how little we know(possibly 50% of all our knowledge!). For we all Know that
simple arithmetic IS complete(eg2+2=4) and yet we trust that higher
or complex math will be so.
Godel prooved that complex
arithmetic and therefore math, will never be.
A sobering thought-and one that doesnt seem to have affected Arithmetic and mathematicians much. So i dont see
why it should "affect" an ordinary person either; And a genius
could use this to his or her advantage; Not just prooving
whether other math branches are incomplete, but proving
where this (arithmetical) incompleteness stops-if it does stop
before simple maths starts!

My definition of "true genius" is the superior aptitude in any given subject beyond the scope of logical expectation or standard .

A genius can either be isolated to one "area of superiority" or be blessed enough to translate that into other areas of interest and dominate that subject as well.

In all cases, it is a standard of excellence with ease. Yet, not without hard work.

Hope that works for ya!

Genius is a lot like beauty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and genius is in the mind of the observer. There are a lot of very famous poets out there, and much of their poetry is incomprehensible to me. I can't relate to it and so they are only geniuses to me in a "truth by consensus" sort of way. On the other hand, many friends can relate their day in such a way that I can truly connect with them, and so I can appreciate their mind.

Ralph Waldo Emerson and Albert Einstein believed that Genius is Common Sense. Common sense is genius because common sense is so rare!

Everyone thinks they have common sense. If I honestly assess my thinking and my choices in life, my 'dumb mistakes' are quite common and my application of 'common sense' is quite rare.

In transient or otherwise: genius is thinking outside a box.
Not THE box.
Not "BEING ABLE TO".
