"Loot" is a slang term. But it is applied to two sorts of actions, both a taking of the unearned by a criminal collectivizing the rights of others.
One is when you pull a robbery--the stolen "swag" or "loot" is money or whatever else you have stolen.
The other meaning has to do with a backformation from the very "too loot"; to take advantage either in a civilized zone or wilderness of the absence of police/regulation enforcers to stop you from stealing that which does not belong to you; so someone can rob the grave of someone and loot what was left there; or he can steal from the dead on a battlefield or the scene of an accident. The objects/money stolen are also called "loot".

I think it is mainly used in America though.
I went there for a few years to study and when I was at the shops, the plastic party bags all say 'loot'.
