Autotroph And Heterotroph

Autotrophs can generate their own energy, those being plants, etc., that can convert light into energy. Heterotrophs eat other substances. Heterotrophs preceded autotrophs, because autotrophs are more complex. A plant can be both, but they are asking (probably) about the simplest of these kinds of organisms. A Venus Fly Trap plant would be an example of "both", but is much more complex that a simple early organism.

The basic difference is the following: Autotrophs make their own food. That is, they synthesize food doing special chemical reactions. The most common example of an autotroph is an organism with chlorophyll (plants and algae). Chlorophyll is a molecule that can bind O2 and CO2 to produce Glucose in the presence of light. Heterotrophs cannot make their own food... look at us: it owuld be wonderful if we could make our own food... world starvation would not exist! It would be so simple to sunbathe to synthesize our food... but we are not able to do that because we are heterotrophs, we cannot make our own food so we have to eat plants, animals or whatever we see in order to get our energy.

An autotroph can make its own food, which includes plants and algae, and heterotrophs have to rely on other organisms for food. Humans are heterotrophs.

autotroph are producers (plants) --- capable of making its own food using sunlight this process is called photosynthesis.
Heterotroph are consumers (human) --- incapable of making its own food hence have to get it from somewhere i.e feeding on other organisms.

autotrophs = make their own food by using the the sun light ( called producers)
heterotrophs = incapable of making their own food, must feed on other organisms to gain energy (called consumers)

An autotroph (a plant performing photosynthesis to produce glucose) makes its own food. Heterotrophs (me) have to go to McDonalds.
