I too reside in this oh so wonderful state... what we've always done in the past is get a couple flashlights (and batteries) candles (and matches) a battery-powered radio (and batteries again) crackers, chips, canned food (manual can-opener) lots of water etc. and if you have young kids something for them to do, i.e. coloring books, board games and the like. If and when a hurricane is heading directly over you, fill up your bathtub with water for flushing the toilet and bathing/washing clothes if your power is out for that long. If you really have money to burn get a generator and some gas. Also, having cash is good because ATMs go down when the power's out.

well, always keep a substantial amount of water mainly because, when a hurricane hits it does contaminate reservoirs which you can drink out of the tap. depending on the severity of the storm the water could be contaminated for weeks. if you run out of water per gallon you should add 8 drops of bleach with an eye dropper. non parish able food, canned foods.
flashlight and a battery operated radio for further warnings power often goes out.
stay away from windows. in fact you should board them up. if you cannot to that you should tape the window like a cross-cross type thing like a spider web. that will prevent the window from severely shattering if God forbid something flyes threw your window at high speed.
avoid wired phones, drains, and water taps & tioletts. lightning can travel through such.
if there should be a tornado then open the windows to lessen the presure in the house to keep from imploding (collapsing) that is the leading cause of homes collapsing from tornadoes. if you cannot open windows because of the boards or tape try and open even a litle or a door with the glass shutters on it. then hide in a closet as close as possible to center of the house. or in a bath tub covered in blankets and pillows from debris.
evacuation is an optimal solution. just make sure your house is secure before leaving.

Board up the windows to prevent them from breaking. Take any movable item that is outside inside to prevent them from blowing away. Put sandbags around the house to prevent water from entering. Stock up on water, nonparishable food items, fuel and cash. Get a generator for power after the storm. Charge up all cell phones. Make sure all of your clothes are clean before the storm hits. Gather all of your clean up gear. Gather the candles, matches, flashlights and batteries. Make sure your family, friends and neighbors know where you are going to be during the storm so they know where to look for you after the storm. Stay inside and be safe!

You bend over and grab your ankles and when the hurricane hits you reach up and kiss your *** goodbye.LoL.Seriously you need extra batteries, portable radio, extra water, canned food, first aid kit, flash lights(at least 2)plus extra batteries for lights,a propane lantern or kerosene. If you have warning of an impending hurricane coming, empty your garbage cans and fill with water and have bucket handy to dip water with.Use to flush toilet. These are your essentials.Just use common sense and gather up anything else you feel you need or that will help you better weather the storm.I also live in florida.good luck
