this rock is very heavy almost like iron, but on closer examination it split apart revealing hundreds of black crystals ,I think it could be a metiorite but I really dont know for sure .I have talked to several coal miners and they have all said they have never seen anything like it .Now I'm open to any suggestion.

Also depends on what type formation the crystals are in and how they are shaped.

If they are rounded then you could have a from of chalcedony. these crystals are tightly grouped together and have rounded points.

If the crystals are pointed then I would have to say you might have a something similar to a smoky quartz geode. just depends and its hard to say without viewing the stone in person.

My advice, post the image at a photo storage site then register with yourgemologist.com forums. they have helped me id many types of stones and minerals.

contact your locate nature center. Maybe attend a gem mineral show in your area and don't forget to take the stone with you. asking around you may get many different answers.

or then again simply upload the image in your yahoo photo storage and post the link and another question.

I have seen many stones and gems, and the one I know that is black and heavy in weight is the onyx.It is to be a good luck stone.I have never seen the stones core though,if you say it has crystals,it could also be a geodes,I've seen many different colored ones, but not black ones.
Check out a store that sells stones and gems, they can give you more info or refer you to someone else

If it split like that, probably not a meteorite. Look up hematite and volcanic rocks.

it sounds like a geode if you broke it and there are crystals inside. not sure though I would have to see the rock.

hematite is my first thought. Meteorites would not ne expected to have crystals within them.

it could be anything that is black and granular. I find lots of black rocks, usually at night.
