Basically colored smoke is made from white smoke with dyes added. A typical recipe (ref.) would be an oxidizer like potassium chlorate or nitrate, a sugar such as lactose, and the dye. When done properly, this is a low-temperature reaction. It should be done with great attention to the detailed instructions and safety precautions.
