The truth of the matter is, with the information you gave, it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell you if you need regular or short. It all has to do with your body proportions and no two people are the same. The ONLY way to know is to put it on, and see how far the coat hangs.

The old standard used to be, you cup your hand, and the end of the coat needed to barely touch the cupped part of your hand. The new standard is an inch or two longer.

One of the important thing is your shoulder width. Make sure, they hang correctly over your shoulder. Too wide or too narrow won't be correct - it needs to be just right.

The best thing to do is to go to a men's clothing store with experienced staff and let them help you. If you are like most people, they can usually find the one that will fit you pretty close, and rest can be adjusted by slight alterations. Don't let them talk you into buying a suit that doesn't fit even close and do a major alterations. It will almost never look right.

By the way, shoulder pads are standard on suits. Some models have more or less of them, but don't buy one without one at all. (even if you can find such a thing) The occasions for needing a suits are fairly conservative events. You do not want to look "too" stylish or different. (assuming you are not buying a leisure suits)

I hope you are not trying to buy one on-line.... especially for your first one. There are so many things that needs to be just right to look correctly. At least, you should get your first one fitted IN PERSON.

Good luck.

Get a two piece, as it might suit your body better. It does not have to be a string bikini. There are lots of two pieces that can flatter you and suit your style.
