pros: great driveable cars if the original owner properly maintained it. parts can also be cheap and maintenance as well if you invest sometime to learn about Audi. You can look to http://www.audiworld.com for more information. I have personally owned 3 Audis and none of them had any major trouble. My wife's current car is a 2001 A4 and the maintenance has been very minimal.
cons:if you neglect the car, just like anything else, it will end up costing you lots of money. Sometimes this will cost you even more than the original maintenance.
Hope that helps.

pros-stock turbo, easy to upgrade, smooth car.
cons-only a 1.8t. its a quick car, but if you want speed go with something a little bigger. maybe the 3.0 a4 or even the 2.8 quattro. if youre lucky you could find an s4 2001 for about the same price as the '02 audia4 1.8 t.

With any higher end car, it comes with higher end parts. There is a reason why cheap cars are cheap and expensive cars are expensive. Audi makes a good car, but like any car, you have to take care of it. More parts=more things to break. Audi does not skimp on technology and makes a car that is ahead of alot of other cars. Drive one and you will see the quality difference in a Civic and an Audi. It's very obvious. Check to see if there are any extended warranties you can get. That will help greatly if this car is at the very top of your budget.

I currently own a 2000 Audi A4. Anytime check engine light comes on you can count on spending about $300 to $500 minimum.
Last friday I went in for check engine light. They charged me $155 for broken vacuum hose - I felt lucky. $155 for broken vacuum hose and I felt lucky. :-(
But then the light came back on again. It turns out MAF sensor was failing and they wanted $279 to replace it.
When it runs, it runs very nicely.

Scotty Shades says that he's seen few A4's get over 160K. What a laugh. My 94 honda civic has 182K miles and runs great and it's cheap to keep. For an expensive car 160K should be nothing.

The 1997-2004 A4 1.8t is prone to oil sludge. Look up "1.8t oil sludge" on the internet. VW/Audi has acknowledged it.

Its a wonderful car. Get a good one that someone has taken good care of, and it'll be great.
Get someone qualified to check the front suspension bushings and rods, the turbo and check that the car has been properly maintained - full service history or walk away.
Consider that these cars are affordable now, but are expensive cars new. These cars are technically very advanced and any maintenance issue will cost more than on a crude banger.

Pros: they ARE reliable if you keep up with oil changes and scheduled maintenance...I have seen a few A4's get over 160k miles because the owners were responsible
Cons: maintenance is expensive for the most part (depending on your warranty/ where you take it)

This is also a model that has been updated well. the new designs and grilles are so much more appealing. Make sure that you get a good price. You are purchasing something with some inherent depreciation in its looks alone.
