He's bored, he's 15 miles from his best friend, we don't have gas in the truck, his brother has the car, and he's sitting here sulking. What can he do for fun at 9:30 on a Friday night without leaving here or driving me crazy?

Make him entertain himself. I'm sure he has video games and movies, etc. If he's still bored send him to bed.

Of course, first ask him if he wants to play Scrabble or Monopoly with you. Spend time with him if he's willing!!

I'm not a parent, but I've been a kid and I'll offer these suggestions (2).

Go on a brisk walk together. Walk fast enough that both your heart rates get up. Ask him what's up at school. Make it a contest as to who can walk faster.

He'll object, but engage him in a board game. Tell him that it's just one night...please grant you that. Play Trivial Pursuit or some other game he'd like better.

(2) Make dinner an event. Make sure everyone has a chance to talk about their day. Have dinner talks about what he'd find interesting and run with that.

Doesn't matter if it's a home-done dinner or a bucket of chicken from somewhere.

Maybe there are videos he'd like to rent, or tossing a ball in the yard. Try to talk to him and take his lead.

Tell him you're flummoxed about how to keep him engaged. Let him know it's important to you. Make sure he knows that his "fun time" is important to you, and that you're willing to make some (your adverb here) willing to make some concessions to ensure that he has some fun.

If he thinks he's smart, you can ask him one of these impossible questions; I don't know what to do if he thinks he's dumb though.
What is the purpose of meaning?
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
What would happen if a snake started to swallow it's tail and not stop?
Be sure to ask him how he got his answers too.

I think his being bored is his problem and not yours. I think a lot of parent today take on responsibilities like their child being bored unnecessarily. If he is bothering you, send him to his room. He can figure something out.

If you have a yard, ask him to please dig a deep, deep hole, that you need it to plant a tree. Then, have him find a young tree, dig it up, and move it to the hole he just dug. Young men need physical work to get them settled. If you don't have a yard, see if there is someone who will help you on that score. You must know someone.
