Do not worry, your baby will not get dehydrated if he/she eats enough. Breastmilk/formula is enough and all they need. Water fills a baby up with absolutely no nutrition. Also, Water supplementation in an infant can lead to oral water intoxication. When this happens, the sodium in his bloodstream becomes so diluted that the baby's body is unable to function properly. This can result in an altered mental state, abnormally low body temperature, bloating, and even seizures

If I remember correctly, it upsets their tummies and they gag on water too, maybe you can water down the formula so they get the extra water without getting fat from feeding to many bottles. But I would only do so if you are outside on a hot day or in a position that the baby needs more hydration. It's also good to give baby water to rinse milk out of mouth before bed- after they have teeth, milk rots them.

This is not a stupid question! My mother had four children, and told me when I had my first child that water could strangle a newborn baby if the nipple hole is too large. She claims to have seen it happen and she was of average I.Q. Water can be very beneficial if the weather is really hot. If baby is not hungry only thirsty, then why feed it? Use your own judgment on how much. You are a good mommy and baby will let you know if more milk is needed.

The rule is that you shouldn't give young babies water. They get all the hydration they need form breast milk and formula. How many wet diapers are you getting? Before you start giving baby water, see if he is dehydrated or not. I would nurse him more often before giving him water. I lived in really hot and humid climates with my babies and I never gave them water or juice until they were at least 6 months and neither one got dehydrated. The pediatricians I had strongly discouraged water at such an early age.

Yes, water is perfectly fine as long as its not contaminated with anything. The reason peds and other say not to give babies water is because if your baby is filled up with water they arent getting the nurtients that they would get from breastmilk or formula. They dont want you to do what they used to and give a baby milk and then water.A little water doesnt hurt though. If your breastfeeding your baby needs anything else for at least the first six month, and breastmilk is mostly water. If you formula feed its water you use to mix in with the formula so you know how much water he she is getting.

My son didn't get plain water until he was about 8 months old. I don't know how old you're calling newborn, but if your baby is at least 3mo old you can give it 1/2 juice and 1/2 water in a bottle. Anything thinner and he would choke.
If it's a little tiny baby then they should be nursing/bottle feeding enough to keep them hydrated.

Drinking water will fill your baby up and he/she will not want to drink breastmilk/formula. Water has no nutrition, newborns need milk. Wait for at least 6 months before giving water.

yes you can give a baby water, however make sure you do not give so much that they will not eat.
also they should not dehydrate if they are nursed/ formula fed, those things have water in them.
good luck!
