It is, most fish don't bother, since they do not sleep. They can be active all day long, but maybe your fish got used to swimming at night, from the aquarium or wherever you bought it.

If you just got him today, he will take some time to get used to your tank. As he gets used to the new conditions, he'll get more active, which is why now (night) is when you see him moving around more. He'll probably be active again during the day tomorrow.

It may also be that the water temperature is too warm for him during the day in your tank, and warm water holds less oxygen. Try to have it in a place that won't be too warm (near a window, in kitchen or bath), but not too cold (near an air conditioner) or where the temperature will change a lot.

Since your goldfsh is new, you'll have to make sure he gets good care in the next few months. Chances are, he's still small, but goldfish can grow over a foot, so he'll need a tank, not a bowl. And these produce a lot of waste, so a filter is a really good thing to have.

Stressness keeps him to the bottom of the tank. Try leaving the light off most of the time

hnm... not really. fish sleep like anything else, and since they don't have eyelids they sleep when it's dark.

what size is his tank? is there a filter? did you cycle it first (NOT just letting the tank run for a few days)?

He is fine. Stop worrying about it. He's just getting used to his new home.
