I have 7 Compaq System Recovery Windows XP Home Edition CDs, and I was trying to leave my computer exactly as it came when I bought it. This is not the first time I do this and everything had gone well, except when I get to CD#6 it doesn't read it and it will not let me go any further. If I turn it off, it will give me a black screen giving me an error and to press ctrl alt del but it still won't do anything. I know it erased my OS already. Once I restarted it tells me to insert the cd#6 again but again it won't read it. What can I do to at least have my desktop working again. Help!!!!!

Yes ... perhaps there is a hidden recovery partition on your hard drive that will allow you to press "F whatever" as an alternative to using the CDs.

In all honesty .... given that it's called a Compaq (& not HP) + that they are on CD (& not DVD) ... I doubt it.

There is software that can salvage data from damaged CDs, & if you email me I will provide you with ready access to it.

That may or may not result in an effective solution.
You can call Compaq (HP) & pay a ridiculous sum for replacement CDs .... but I would just get a new version of Windows (legal or not) & go from there.... most of the stuff on the factory CDs is crapware anyways.

Email me & I WILL offer you the means to get your PC up & running again.

Unfortunately I think you're going to have to call Compaq and request a new CD.

You can restore your computer back to it's original factory state by pressing F9 while your computer is starting up. Then click on destructive recovery. Make sure you have all external devices unplugged, like, printers, modems, etc. Don't unlpug mouse and keyboard.

Try to wash that CD #6 in plain room-temperature water then let it air dry until it is fully dry.

Maybe the CD has some dirt/dust that can be removed? Otherwise you may indeed have to request an new one.
