I don't normally use quotes to give an answer, but it dawned on me that the answer I wanted to give came from a movie.... So what the heck, I'll give a quote this one time.
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." (Moulin Rouge)

Sad to say, all of us are conditioned by things we need to do to stay alive. There must be something more than 10-18 years of education, for you to get a stable job just to make sure you meet ends and retirement needs. Industry create accumulative values, that does not necessary benefit all. Say, one health problem will have the possibility of wiping out your life savings.
Welcome to the game of life monopoly.
What do people really want? Enough to provide for = no worries = comfort. Having enough is still important, and it is also perhaps the effort in 'substaining' and the hardship and experience that moulds the character in soul.
But if most will realize that that is the only thing that is eternal and what ultimately you can take it along with you.
Bottom line, you still need the tokens to stay in the game.

Most people want never to be completely alone. To share life with another person or another life may be what we all strive for and wish to maintain..
Having someone, a friend, an enemy, an colleague, a dog or even an idol to reflect back on us our sense of purpose. .
If I were the only person or life form left on earth there would be purpose to my existence. I would be truly bereft.
Who would I ask questions of?
God?
But would He/She answer?

Abstractly speaking,
I think most people become aware of discomfort and
attempt to establish comfort for that discomfort. The
progressive comfort continues until something more
discomfortable gains people's attention and then
comfort is established for the new discomfort.
Comfort, through recognizing inadequacies and
attempting to make them adequate.

Stage Three Locomotor: 3-6 years, initiative vs. inadequacy, independence

Misogynists and misandrists are who they are, because of the fact they see there is an unfair benefit. If one person had an unfair benefit over yet another guy or woman by using gang they belong to, no longer because of the fact of something they have carried out as someone, then it breeds anger. In any problem the place one team has greater rights or reward than yet another team, then there will be human beings crying "foul", and being labelled. certainty is subjective, and the grass is often greener. yet some rights are written into regulation, and that's the place certainty will become legally binding, and truly unfair.

in my humble opinion, some people don't know what they want out of life besides being happy. What then actually will make us happy?
First things first, we must have a roof to cover our security needs. A lot of people are really working their socks off to provide what they deemed to be decent life for themselves and family. At the same time balancing their social life with friends.
If that is covered, then they probably will want to enjoy life as much.
End of the day, to feel fulfilled, we must feel that we are constantly learning and growing and also be able to add value to other people's life...maybe that's what people want...ultimately.

Without getting into great depth, I think MOST people want the basics, shelter, food, health care, & then it goes to different "levels." Certainly some strive for success--some for possessions, & others for spiritual understanding. But I think the basics are to survive.

inner peace... self satisfaction... and a sense of accomplishment..
those who turn to things which are harmful to them or others lack one or all of the above in some way or another... depression usually is the lack of self satisfaction or accomplishment... lack of "happiness"...
others just want to be recognized as the person they really are... not the person that others want them to be... in a world where people are told they have to change how the look, drop an accent.. gain an accent.. to fit some clone image of what importance, prominence and success looks like.. wont actually feel like they achieved that goal they strived for...

Harmony. Balance of serenity & joyfulness. That's not to say they "know" this, but in my experience with people, this is really the bottom line of what they truly want. No, "striving" isn't "bad." But think about it. Striving, & goals are toward a DESTINATION. What would that destination be??

I think basically, happiness and satisfaction. We do the wrong things to try to make ourselves content, to attempt to make ourselves happy when doing the right things failed. And so, within every action we do, we probably just want to take the happiness in the life and become satisfied with the results as we reach closer to death, knowing if we lived a happy life in our lives.
